Spirit photography
Saturday 31 October · 7–10 pm · La Nau Bostik
How 19th-century photographers photographed spirits, and how you can do it yourself for Castanyada.
In the late 19th century, there were photographers who claimed to photograph spirits. In reality they used two things we master: exposure time and double exposure. In this workshop we teach you how they did it and put it into practice for Castanyada.
It will be on Saturday 31 October, from 7 to 10 pm, at Nau Bostik.
What we’ll do
- The history. 19th-century spirit photography and the fraud of the spiritualist photographers, with real examples.
- The technique. Long exposures with figures that move or vanish mid-exposure, and double exposures in camera.
- The practice. A session at Nau Bostik in low light, with torches, sheets and costumes to make our own apparitions.
- The developing. You can develop the film with us in a later session, if you like.
What’s included
One black-and-white film per student. If you have a camera with Bulb mode or multiple exposure, bring it; if not, we can lend you one.
What to bring
Make-up and characterisation (make-up, costume and props to create your apparition) are each student’s responsibility.
Who it’s for
Anyone who wants to experiment with light and time, with no previous experience needed.
