Cyanotype postcards

Friday 11 December · 10 am–1 pm · Nau Bostik

An afternoon making Christmas postcards with the sun: paper, cyanotype and water, nothing else.

A Christmas postcard doesn’t have to be made with ink: it can be made with the sun. In this afternoon we coat paper with cyanotype, lay objects and negatives on it and let the light do the rest. Each student takes theirs home, made and developed on the spot.

It’s Friday 11 December, at the Nau Bostik.

What we’ll do

  1. The mix. We prepare the cyanotype solution and coat the paper.
  2. The composition. Postcards with objects, plants, cut-outs and negatives (photocopies on transparent paper).
  3. The exposure. In December the sun is low and the prints need more minutes; we use that to understand why.
  4. The development. Water and that’s it. We watch the blue appear.

What’s included

All the materials: paper, cyanotype solution, objects, trays and water. Each student takes a set of postcards home.

What to bring

If you want to use your own images, bring negatives or photocopies on transparent paper (acetate). We provide the rest.

Who it’s for
